Rare Books and Original Belle Epoque Journals
Books from the pre-1915 era devoted to absinthe are highly collectible - the two profusely illustrated catalogues
published in 1896 and 1905 by Maison Pernod Fils, together with Edmond Couleru's authoritative Au Pays de
l'Absinthe are probably the most sought after.

Also popular are the wide variety of pamphlets and polemics published on both sides of the pro- and anti-absinthe
debate. These give a fascinating insight into the thinking of the temperance movement at the turn of the last century,
as well as the increasingly forlorn attempts by the anti-prohibitionists to defend their beloved Fee Verte. Many of these
often fragile booklets are very rare, in some cases with only a single copy recorded.

Absinthe features prominently in the he satirical press of the day, and the absinthe related illustrations and cartoons
from the many satirical and illustrated journals are avidly collected. These give us an equalled visual record of how
absinthe was drunk in both high and low society.

In the more modern era, the first books by the pioneer absinthe historian Marie-Claude Delahaye are now all long out
of print, and very collectible, both because of their seminal importance in the modern absinthe revival, and because
they contain much information and many illustrations not duplicated in subsequent re-editions and re-issues.

Au Pays de l'Absinthe, by Edmond Couleru
Published in 1908, and written primarily to counteract the increasingly
strident anti-absinthe propaganda of the temperance movement, this is the
most authorative contemporary resource on the history, production and
consumption of absinthe. Particularly interesting is the detailed statistical
information on absinthe consumption patterns, and the growth of and
expansion of the industry.
